The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, IRC offers life-saving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in more than 40 countries, IRC restores safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted by conflict or disaster.
The IRC has launched an emergency response to support refugees from Ukraine in Poland in February 2022, and is working with partner agencies in Poland to facilitate emergency and integration assistance that can be used where it is needed the most.
Job Overview: We are seeking a Head of Education/Child Protection, who will lead IRC's Poland education and child protection initiatives, focusing on program growth, quality and impact.
Responsibilities include managing program managers, ensuring effective execution, and fostering professional development.
Key Responsibilities
Program Strategy and Growth
- Lead the design and expansion of IRC Poland’s education and child protection programs, ensuring alignment with IRC’s global strategies and local contexts.
- Identify new funding opportunities and lead proposal development in collaboration with the Grants team and partners.
- Strengthening partnerships with government authorities, local NGOs, international actors, and donors to improve access to and quality of education and child protection services.
- Conduct assessments and need analyses to inform evidence-based programming.
Program Quality and Impact
- Ensure education and child protection programs are high-quality, impactful, and responsive, drawing on global standards, best practices, and innovation.
- Develop and oversee monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEAL) frameworks, promoting data-driven decision-making and adaptive management.
- Ensure integration of protection, psychosocial support, and inclusive education principles across all relevant programming.
- Lead the development of tools, training, and methodologies to enhance technical excellence and delivery.
Team Leadership and Management
- Directly manage and mentor Education and Child Protection Managers, providing coaching, capacity-building, and performance support.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture that emphasizes learning and accountability.
- Ensure that staff receive access to relevant training, technical support, and development opportunities.
- Promote staff well-being, professional growth, and leadership within the team.
Stakeholder Engagement and Representation
- Represent IRC in national and local coordination forums, education and protection working groups, and strategic partnerships.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, partners, ministries, and child protection and education networks.
- Advocate for the rights of refugee and marginalized children and youth, particularly related to education access and protection services.
Job Requirements:
- Education: Master’s degree in Education, Social Work, Child Development, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in the humanitarian or development sector, with at least 5 years in leadership roles within international NGOs focused on education and/or child protection.
- Language: Polish (C2, native level), English (C1), knowledge of Ukrainian, Belorussian, Russian is an advantage.
- Skills and Competencies: Strategic program development, proposal writing, staff capacity-building, coordination, and representation.
Key Working Relationships: ESMT, Program Managers, MEAL team, Partners, Donors, Government entities, and relevant IRC regional and HQ-based technical teams.
Working Environment: Hybrid. This position is based in Warsaw, Poland, with 30 to 40% local and international traveling.
